About the book

Layout 1

Raymond Brown, popularly known as Smooth Suave, is one of Jamaica’s biggest drugs lords. With eight children by six baby mommas and counting, he’s a player for life. A true baller, he lavishes in his wealth. He’s a shot caller with “soldiers” wheeling and dealing all over Jamaica. It’s Suave’s world, and everyone else just lives in it . . . or so he thinks. However, his nemesis, King Kong, sees it differently. Rivals since childhood, King Kong is hell-bent on destroying Suave at any cost. As the war over power, drugs, and money intensifies—from Wilton Gardens (Rema) to Arnett Gardens (Jungle)—bodies are dropping like flies, washing the island of paradise in blood. But it is the murder and kidnapping of two of Suave’s loved ones that bring him to his knees. Being framed for murder, hunted by the cops, pursued by his enemies, betrayed by friends, tormented by a horrid secret, and fighting to protect his family and empire, Suave is nearing his breaking point. Yet, he isn’t going down without a fight. VoilĂ ! Suave makes a deal to eradicate his enemies—but if it backfires, it could very well cause him his own life. Then God counteroffers Suave’s deal with His own—one that will undoubtedly give Suave the victory he needs but requires him to give up his drug empire and turn his life over to the Lord. With his motto being, “I don’t do God,” will Suave accept God’s deal or take the risk of his own deal? [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Iy6lAOog-0]

excerpt

“Today, I want to talk to you about redemption,” Bishop Hudson began. “Ephesians 1:7 says, ‘In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.’ Amen. Redemption is possible through the blood of Jesus! Hello, somebody? I said, you can be delivered from the bondage of sin and find peace with God. Am I speaking to somebody?” “Amen, Pastor,” a member shouted from the front. “You better speak to me, Bishop,” a young lady in the choir yelled. Bishop Hudson paused, took off his jacket, and handed it to his assistant. He grabbed the microphone out of the stand and paced the pulpit. “We all are in need of redemption. You know why? Because we all have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God.” Hmmm, interesting, Suave thought. Even Christians need redemption, too. As if he read Suave’s mind, Bishop Hudson remarked, “So you can act like you were born holy, pure, and righteous all you want, but that’s not the case. We were able to become a child of God because Jesus paid the price for our sins on the cross. His death was in exchange of our life.” “Praise the Lord,” “Thank you, Jesus,” and “Hallelujah” rang throughout the church. “Do you want to be free from the burden of guilt?” Bishop Hudson asked, looking out at the congregation. Suave shifted in his seat, wondering why the bishop was looking at him. “Do you want to be free from curses and bondage?” Bishop Hudson stepped down from the pulpit into the aisle. “God already purchased our freedom,” he said, his eyes wandering from one face to the other as he moved closer to the back. He better stop picking on me, or else I’m stepping. With his arms folded and face screwed up like a dried apple, Suave defiantly stared at the bishop as he seemed to get closer. I’m no punk. “I said, you can go from being a sinner to a saint if you accept God’s gift of eternal life.” Bishop Hudson was now at Suave’s bench where he paused. Suave glanced at the bishop through the corner of his eyes, his head held straight. He didn’t acknowledge the bishop, and for his own sake, Suave was hoping the bishop wouldn’t acknowledge him. “I’m glad to see you this morning, my brother.” Bishop Hudson looked down at Suave, who still wasn’t looking at him. All eyes in the church turned toward the back where Suave sat. Alwayne and Annette held hands and nervously looked on. Bishop Hudson was known to prophesize to his members, revealing things that no one else knew but God. He would also predict certain happenings that always came true. This usually made some members excited about receiving a blessing, and others nervous when they hadn’t been walking on the “right” side. “God is going to give you a second chance.” Bishop Hudson rested his hand on Suave’s shoulder. “Those demons that are haunting you are leading you down a narrow road.” Suave’s heart began to gallop in his chest. He wanted to brush off the preacher’s hand, but he felt compelled to hear what the man had to say. “Your mind gets so mixed up at times that you find it hard to differentiate between the real thing and your imagination. But God says to tell you that He is going to give you the victory.” Some people were now standing on their feet clapping, some praying, and others speaking in tongues. “Deliver him, Lord,” an elderly man shouted. “Set your son free, Father Jesus,” screamed another member. “God is going to right the wrong that was done to you, so you can be free to serve Him and His people.” Tears filled Bishop Hudson’s eyes as he leaned over to Suave, his face only inches away from Suave’s. On a will of its own, Suave’s neck turned, and he locked eyes with the bishop. Suave’s tears betrayed him and seeped down his face.

Prologue
“The rumor is three black boys killed your parents. Is it true?”
Perched on the edge of his cot, Noah Charleston lifted his eyes to look at the four half-men standing before him. The leader of the pack, Mitch, was sixteen with a baby face, braces and bad acne around his chin. His two muscles, twins Roger and Wylie, were about a year older at seventeen. Both were built like linebackers. Finally, the Whiz, or Matthew a slender fifteen year old with glasses that took up half of his face was the brain of the group.
“Answer him,” Roger prodded, stepping into the small cell.
Noah shrugged. “That was a year ago.”
“We can do something about that.” Mitch popped his gum. “Join us.”
Noah had heard about the “Avengers” as they dubbed themselves. They ruled the juvenile detention hall and dressed in their version of combat gear: khaki pants, boots and camouflage shirts. Even the counselors were afraid of them.
Noah kept to himself. Everyone pretty much left him alone. Except for today.
He looked up at them. “Do I have a choice?”
Wylie stepped forward. “Do you want me to help you make up your mind?”
“How about I help fix that ugly face of yours?” Noah threw back.
Wylie sprung at Noah. Noah jumped to his feet and sidestepped the much bigger guy. Then he bashed Wylie in the back of the head. Roger lunged at him.
“Quit it,” Mitch bellowed. “Leave him alone.”
Roger’s chest heaved but he backed off. His eyes held a threat. Noah met his gaze, daring him to bring it.
“I like your heart,” Mitch said. “We need you.”
“I like my own company,” Noah said.
“We have something you want,” the Whiz said. His voice was barely above a whisper. He wheezed his words as if he was always in need of an asthma pump.
“You don’t have—”
Noah’s eyes widened. The Whiz held a crumpled 3x5 photograph in his hand. Noah snatched it, “Where did you find this?”
“We have our ways,” Mitch bragged.
Noah squinted.
“I hacked into the computer system,” the Whiz said. This time he coughed at the end of his words. “I know who took your picture.”
“We’ve handled him.” Mitch’s tone was solemn.
“That’s why you should be thanking us,” Wyle said, rubbing the back of his head.
Noah looked at the photograph of his parents and closed his eyes to keep the tears from falling. It was his most prized possession. When he had been sent here to the juvenile home two months ago, Noah had placed it under his pillow before lunch. When he checked for it later that night, it had been gone. He searched everywhere but couldn’t find it. That was the first time since his parents’ funeral Noah had cried himself to sleep.
“Thank you,” he grounded out.
“Thank us by joining us,” Mitch said.
The Whiz held up a picture. It was an African-American by the name of Tony Billows who had taken it.
Noah clenched his fists. “Where is he?”
“In the hospital with some missing teeth,” Roger said.
“And a missing pinky,” Wylie added.
Noah blinked. He would have settled it with a well-deserved punch or two. Not doing Tony serious injury. “That was vicious.”
“It was a message. You mess with one of us you mess with us all. We’re a family,” Mitch said.
“The Avengers,” Wylie and Roger said in unison. They held out their fists. Noah had reservations but Mitch had used the magic word. Family. Noah wanted family. He made a fist and the boys all did a fist bump.
“The Avengers,” he said.
“Welcome,” Mitch said.
“Glad to have you,” The Whiz whispered. “Now, let’s get you some proper clothes and a haircut.”
Noah swallowed his reservations. He had a family again. Nothing else mattered.

My Top Ten Reads of 2015

Michelle's Book Stop Top Ten 5-Star Reads of 2015
I read sooooo many great books this year, I couldn't stop at 5. So here are my top Ten. I have an eclectic reading taste. Not all the books listed are Christian Fiction.

Honorable Mentions: The Forbidden Man by Elle Wright, The Stranger by Harlen Coben

#10 Righteous Ways by Rhonda McKnight
I finished this in hours. I got a little teary-eyed with this heartwarming tale. I can't wait to read more about Samaria in the upcoming novel, Shame on You. It was released late in the year but I had to add it to this list. Great read from an amazing author.

#9 Friction by Sandra Brown
Sandra Brown is one of absolute favorite authors. Once I started I could not put it down. I read this book in a matter of hours. The suspense, the improbable romance, vendettas had me on the edge of my seat. The title suited. Crawford's journey had me tear up. He was flawed, human but a hero. Truly enjoyed this read.

#8 Memory Man by David Baldacci
Excellent Read. The Memory Man had me turning the pages. I was caught up until the very end. There is a new hero, Decker and his mind is amazing. I have read several of David Baldacci's work. I love that Decker is flawed but phenomenal.

#7 Lady Elect 2 by Nikita Lynnette Nichols
I love a big woman confident in her skin who knows how to put herself together. The follow-up to Lady Elect made me laugh and definitely had moments where my eyes bulged. Lady Arykah has a mouth on her but she's fierce and loyal. The ending has me asking WHO said that? For me the Breakout Character was Myrtle. She is a treat.

#6 Jezebel's Daughter by Jacquelin Thomas

Whew! What a twisty-good read. My grandmother used to make soup and what was great about it was that she threw everything in there. But all the ingredients came together for some seriously good soup. Jezebel's Daughter was all that and then some. Jacquelin Thomas had romance, repentance, redemption, revenge, remorse, retaliation, religion which made for a sizzling read. She weaved multiple characters and their storylines toward a finale that left me stunned and wanting more. All I can say is nothing turned out how I imagined and there were a few "Oh, snap" moments in this soap opera. Great storytelling. And look at that cover. Can we say hot?

#5 Secret Places by Vivian Kay

Excellent writing. Vivian Kay should amazing skill when creating the characters. The plot line was so creative. She ventures into a topic that is so out there while weaving in God's redemptive plan. This book was so good I had to create my own event to talk about it.

#4 The Ultimate Betrayal by Kimberla Lawson Roby

The Ultimate Betrayal was the ultimate in writing craft. The dialogue between characters was one of the strongest elements in the novel. Kimberla is a master at dialogue that you can follow even without tags or beats. For me, there were so many life lessons to be learned from Alicia's story. Her battle was between her mind and heart. What she felt was expected versus her own desires. However, the breakout character was Melanie. Melanie battles something as an adult that we would expect to see in someone much younger. I felt her struggle scene by scene. The transformation of this character is glaring. Melanie is a living example of how crucial a role parents play in an individual's development. This wouldn't be a Reverend Curtis Black novel without the reverend appearing. One of the powerful sentiments he says, "there are so many times when we've done things that could have been prevented ... if only we'd kept our faith in God." Can I get an Amen?

#3 - The Favorite Son by Tiffany L. Warren

Tiffany L. Warren has crafted an edgy, meaningful Jacob-and-Esau cautionary tale with thought-provoking lessons and themes . The descriptive language brings the characters and scenes to vibrant life. Friends, all I can say is with all the drama going on, when God acts, He will leave you breathless. I imagine this will be a great discussion piece for many. I LOVED it.

#2 - Mama's Boy - ReShonda Tate Billingsley

Mama's Boy by ReShonda Tate Billingsley is one of the best books I've read this year. ReShonda creates characters with so many layers that you have to keep turning the pages to learn more about them. This was a remarkable journey of forgiveness and never say never. You never know what you would do until you're in a situation, so it's best not to judge. One of the most powerful lines I read was, "You can't help anyone face their demons, when you're helping justify their actions." How true that is.

#1 - Stand Your Ground - Victoria Christopher Murray

Victoria Christopher Murray is the mistress of first lines. From the very first sentence to the last I was drawn into the story of two women: Janice and Meredith. Two women from different worlds who share one thing in common: death. With artful descriptions, Victoria put me inside their hearts and minds. I did not just enjoy this read, I lived it. I lived every scene on BOTH sides! I finished it in hours. I had to. When I read the last line, I knew that I had been schooled. I had seen the impact of Stand Your Ground laws and I knew this book would stay with me, always. There is forgiveness, love, twists, turns but above all: Truth. Real. Insightful. Unadulterated and told without apology. A must read.

I had so so many to choose from but this pivotal MOMENT so eloquently described is my absolute favorite from Stand Your Ground.

"We weren’t friends. But we were something. We were two women. Two mothers. One with a son and one without. We were two people whose lives were forever linked and forever changed. We were Janice Johnson and Meredith Spencer. Forever hopelessly connected." Quoted with permission from Stand Your Ground.
